Synology NASes balance nicely between the all-too-simple NASes that do nothing more than a file server and complicated everything-but-the-kitchen sink NASes. It is easy to put together physically and configured. Its line of NASes starts from $100 to $1000. The interesting part is even the cheapest NAS has almost all of the functionality of the more expensive ones. The main difference is speed and features like RAID for their multi-drives models. My choice is the economical DS110j. For $150 on Amazon or Newegg, you plop in a SATA harddrive and that’s it.
